Kyle Turley: From Gridirons to Guitars
Kyle Turley’s journey through music is as dynamic as his career as a professional football player. Growing up in the vibrant landscape of Southern California, Turley ignited his passion for music at the age of 14 when he picked up the guitar. Influenced by a diverse mix of punk, grunge, and metal, as well as the rich sounds of country music from his father, he began honing his musical craft while balancing an athletic career.
During his time in the NFL, Turley didn’t just tackle opponents—he also took to the stage. In the offseason, he played in various bands, from cover groups to the intense death metal ensemble Perpetual Death Mode. His collaborations extended to fellow NFL players, where he explored different instruments, mastering the bass and drums alongside his guitar prowess.
After hanging up his football cleats, Turley embraced Nashville’s musical heartbeat. In 2009, he founded The Kyle Turley Band, releasing a self-titled EP that set the stage for his debut full-length album, "Anger Management," in 2010. This album not only resonated with fans, netting over 10,000 sales but also climbed the charts, peaking at No. 69 on iTunes and No. 8 on
Billboard's Heatseekers South Central chart.
His subsequent EP, "Death, Drugs & the DoubleCross," released in 2011, showcased Turley’s evolution as an artist, becoming a top seller in New Orleans and hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers South Central chart. By 2013, Turley unveiled his second full-length album, "SkullShaker," solidifying his commitment to turning personal experiences and memories into powerful musical stories.
Describing his sound as “power country,” Turley blends old-school country with heavy metal and punk rock influences, reflecting his diverse background. Beyond the music, his lyrics often pay homage to his football legacy, with tracks like "Flyin' Helmets" and ”Anger Management" drawing from memorable moments on the field. He expresses his heartfelt connection to New Orleans with "My Soul Bleeds Black and Gold," a tribute that captures his love for both the city and its cherished football team.
Turley has toured extensively, sharing the stage with legends like Hank Williams III, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and George Jones, showcasing his unique style across the country.
Expanding his musical repertoire, Turley co-founded Delta Doom in 2013, a two-piece doom metal project where he sings and plays drums alongside bassist Rob Ogles. Their debut live EP, "Half Alive," released that same year, further exemplifies Turley’s versatility as an artist.
In addition to his creative pursuits, Turley established Gridiron Records in 2006 with industry veterans Mike Doling and Tim Pickett, nurturing up-and-coming talent and expanding his influence within the music realm.
Kyle Turley’s artistic journey is a thrilling blend of grit, passion, and dedication, and as he continues to create and perform, his unique voice resonates with fans across genres, inspiring new generations to embrace the power of music.
