Birdie's family carries a proud legacy of military service. Her great-grandfather joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving with the 7th Army, 103rd Infantry Division, in the European Theater of Operations. During his military service, he won two Bronze Stars, one Silver Star for bravery, and three Purple Hearts while engaged in several large battles. He was also awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW for ninety days. Additionally, her grandfather served honorably in the U.S. Army, while her other grandfather dedicated his service to the U.S. Air Force. Their courage and sacrifice have shaped the values she carries today.
